"Making a difference, one child at a time."
Hello! My name is Emer Kerr and I am so excited to be returning to Holy Family School for the 7th year! As a recipient of a Catholic School education, I feel extremely lucky to be able to continue my career in this wonderful school.
In 2013, I received my Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education: English from LIU Post and completed my Master’s Degree in Childhood Education (1-6) at LIU Post in 2016. After 6 years as a 7th grade homeroom teacher and have taught grades 6-8. Currently, I am the 6th grade homeroom teacher and teaching 7th and 8th grade ELA,6th grade religion and 6th-8th grade library.
In my free time, I enjoy being outside and spending time with my family and friends. I am also the adviser for our school’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. I have always had a passion for both reading and writing and I love sharing that passion with my students each and every day.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
Favorite Saint?
Saint Cecilia would probably be my favorite saint because she is the patron saint of music and I have always been a music lover. I have played piano since I was a little girl and love going to concerts with friends any chance I get.
Favorite Quote?
“To thine own self be true”- William Shakespeare
Favorite Verse?
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Hello students! My name is Ms. Kerr and I am SO excited to work with you in ELA! One of my absolute favorite things to do is read so, in my class, we will read A LOT! My goal is to expose you all to as many different genres of literature as possible. To do that, we will read short stories, poetry, dramas, as well as many nonfiction and informational pieces, all culminating in a novel study at the end of the year.
One of my other favorite things to do is write, so we will also be doing a lot of writing in my class too.
Students in my class write in many different styles ranging from narrative, persuasive, and informational. In fact, one of the units my students really look forward to every year is our debate unit where you will be actually debating another classmate and trying to persuade the rest of the class to side with you on a particular topic.
Middle school is a really fun time here at HFS and I can’t wait to get started! See you in class!
Message to Parents
Hello parents! Thank you so much for your interest in Holy Family School and placing your faith in a Catholic education. I am so excited to work with, not only your amazing children, but you as well. Families play such an important role in children’s education, especially during the middle school years and I love involving the families of those that I teach.
In my classroom, I strive to teach students, not only the fundamentals of ELA, but how to be more empathetic, driven, and self-aware people. To do this, I do my best to provide as many opportunities for my students to listen to and read stories that they might not have ever heard before and expose them to as many different genres as possible so that they have a better understanding of how powerful the written word can be.
As I said before, I love involving the families of those I teach, and am a true believer that education is most effective when it is a collaborative effort between families, students, and teachers. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions that you may have. I am always available and easily reached by my school email.
Thank you again for your interest in this amazing school! I cannot wait to start working with you!
