Chapter 1- We Respond to God’s Love How can you be true to yourself?
Human dignity- the value and worth that we share because God created us in his image and likeness
We are created to respond to God’s goodness and love.
Our ability to choose right over wrong is a sign of our human dignity.
Natural law- the law of God within us, which is known by human reason
Conscience- the ability to know the difference between good and evil, right and wrong; enables us to make right choices
Free will- God’s gift to human beings of the freedom and ability to choose what to do
Original Sin- the first sin committed by the first human beings; because of Original Sin, we:
Are subject to ignorance, suffering, and death
Have a tendency to use our free will to turn from God and his laws
Eternal life- a life of happiness with God forever
Grace- a participation, or a sharing, in God’s life and friendship
Given to us in the Sacrament of Baptism
Church- the community of people who believe in Jesus Christ, have been baptized in him, and follow his teachings
God calls all members of the Church to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ by what they say and do.
Mortal sin- separates us from God; three necessary conditions:
Grave matter
Full knowledge
Complete consent
Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation- God forgives our sins if we are sorry and have a firm desire not to sin again
How can we be all that God calls us to be—reflections of his goodness and holiness?
Holiness- a participation in God’s goodness and a response to God’s love by the way that we live
Jesus Christ- the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity; the perfect example of living in holiness; God offers us forgiveness and salvation through Jesus Christ.
Holy Spirit- reminds us of Jesus’ teachings, helps us understand God’s Word, helps us to do good and avoid sin
Kingdom of God- the power of God’s love active in our lives and in our world
How can you be holy?
