Temple- the holy place in Jerusalem where the Jewish people gathered to worship God
Scribes- scholars of the Law during the time of Jesus
Great Commandment- “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)
Shema- a prayer from the Book of Deuteronomy reminding the Jewish people to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength
Decalogue- the Ten Commandments
Idolatry- giving worship to a creature or thing instead of God (Israelites- golden calf)
Atheism- a sin against the First Commandment in which one rejects or denies God’s existence
Theological virtues- faith, hope, and love; they make it possible for us to have a relationship with God
First three commandments- specifically instruct us in the ways God wants us to love him:
• First- we must believe in God and put him first in our lives
• Second- God reveals that his name is sacred
• Third- we must gather for Mass every Sunday and on the Holy Days of Obligation

Sacred- holy
Reverence- honor, love, respect
Blasphemy- a thought, word, or act that makes fun of or shows contempt or hatred of God, the Church and the saints, or sacred objects
Perjury- the act of making a false oath
Cursing- calling on God to do harm to someone
Sabbath- a day set apart to rest and honor God
Lord’s Day- Sunday, the day that Jesus Christ rose from the dead
Eucharist- the center of our life and worship as Catholics
Paschal Mystery- the suffering, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus Christ
