"Making a difference, one child at a time."
Where are you from?
Welcome! My name is Kara Doherty and this is my
first year teaching at Holy Family School. I
went to school and grew up in Hicksville, but now live in Bellmore. I am so excited for our year
together and can’t wait for all of the learning and fun we will have in 1st Grade.
What is your education?
I graduated from CUNY Queens College with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and shortly after
graduating, I pursued my Masters Degree at Touro College where I graduated with a degree in
Childhood Education/Teaching Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6. Currently, I am in the
process of getting my extension in Early Childhood Education B-2. While going through school
to get my Masters Degree, I was a Kindergarten Teaching Assistant for 2 years in Island Park.
After completing my Masters Degree, I became a Permanent Substitute teacher in East Meadow
where I taught in General Education classes, Co-Teach classes, self-contained classrooms and
utilized my Applied Behavior Analysis skills daily. When I am not teaching I enjoy spending
quality time with my family and friends. I also enjoy teaching dance lessons which I have been
doing for 10 years at the dance studio I grew up in.
What can students look forward to when they join your class?
I am overjoyed to join Holy Family’s school community as an educator and share my creative,
nurturing, and energetic talents to help guide your children to each of their individual success!
This year we will be learning many exciting different things. While striving for academic
success- it is most important to remain anchored in faith together as a class. I believe that we
are all lifelong learners socially, emotionally, spiritually, and academically. My goal is to teach
my students to cherish learning as much as I do! Providing students with a safe and welcoming
environment where they can be as comfortable as possible. Never give up, you are capable of
amazing things!
